In the UK it is not only polite, but it is the law to warn you if there is a speed camera or the possibility of a speed camera further up the road. Speed Cameras are obviously supposed to be a preventative measure to make people slow down.

Likewise the rock sign is a warning of a preventative measure. But this time it is to make slow drivers speed up to the speed limit.

Have you noticed you only find them on country roads that usually have a high speed limit (60 mph here)? The sign is a warning that if you drive too slowly (40mph) then mountain nymphs hired by the government will push great whopping boulders onto your car.

This means that you see the sign, speed up, yet continue to look at the road because you're safe as long as you're not driving as slow as a week in the jail!

Unfortunately, government funding has run short on this scheme and often these signs warn you but there is no mountain nymph present and the perpetraitors (which I can't spell) go free and unharmed!

Hope this clears it up for you!
